Today In Sad Food News: 80,000 Pounds Of Bacon Recalled For Misbranding

Let’s all pour out a little bacon grease on the ground for our fallen pork comrades, delicious bits of savory umami that will never reach the lips of consumers: More than 80,000 pounds of bacon have been recalled after a Florida company says the products were misbranded.

Abe’s Finest Meats is recalling around 80,050 pounds of hickory smoked slice bacon products, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The issue lies in the labels, which did not declare the ingredient sodium nitrite. FSIS discovered the omission during a label review.

The affected bacon products are 10-lb. bulk frozen packages of “CEDAR CREEK HICKORY SMOKED SLICED BACON” and were produced on various dates between July 23 and December 11, 2014. They were shipped to distributors in Florida and Georgia

Thus far, no adverse reactions due to consumption of these products has been reported, but if you have questions or think you have one of the affected items, contact Ricky Brown, Plant Manager, at (386) 328-5157.
