Dollar General Buys 41 Closed Walmart Express Store Locations

Earlier this year, Walmart put an end to its Walmart Express experiment, shuttering all 102 of the smaller-format stores,  some of which had been opened for less than a year. But not all of these locations will remain vacant, with Dollar General deciding to open up shop in dozens of former Express stores.

Dollar General announced today that it will relocate 40 current stores into the shells of shuttered Walmart Express locations. The company will also open one new store inside of a former Express. The newly acquired real estate covers stores in 11 states.

It’s unclear how much Dollar General paid for the buildings.

The new stores will feature additional sales floor space and new offerings such as fresh meat and produce. Additionally, 37 of the stores will feature fueling stations.

“Dollar General is excited to add these locations to our existing store base. We look forward to the opportunity to better serve our customers in these communities by continuing to provide the convenience and value they expect from Dollar General,” Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.
