Airbnb Working On “Tour Guide” App That Provides Recommendations For Things To Do

Nearly five months ago, Airbnb declared it wanted to offer users more than just a way to connect homeowners with people looking for a place to stay. Now the company reveals it is testing an app that provides travelers with information about nearby restaurants, available tours, happy hours, festivals, and other things to do during their visit.

Airbnb Trips, as it’s listed in the Google Play Store, acts as a concierge of sorts for travelers, providing them with personalized suggestions on activities based on city guidebooks, dining, and happy hour events, Bloomberg reports.

The app’s Google Play Store listing shows that it is currently unreleased, but offers several examples of itinerary options in the San Francisco area, including a happy hour and adventure tour.

The Information reported (subscription only) last week that the app will also benefit hosts. Those renting out their homes will have the opportunity to make a bit of extra money by providing recommendations or giving tours to guests.

Bloomberg reports that Airbnb is reportedly set to unveil the app at a conference in November. Until then, the company is keeping mum.

“We’re continually experimenting with new things and we don’t have anything to share right now, but we have a few exciting things in the works,” Nick Papas, a spokesperson for Airbnb, tells Bloomberg.

News of the soon-to-be-released app comes months after Airbnb suggested it would branch out to offer add-on travel services to customers this year.

When you reserve a home rental or a room with Airbnb, you’ll have the option to book available services as well. Internally, the project has the fun name of “magical trips,” and the plan was for it to go live later this year.
