A few months ago, some lead-contaminated turmeric turned up in a wide variety of retailers, and also in batches of curry powder from Oriental Packing Company sold under a variety of brands. Now the potentially contaminated turmeric has turned up in more curry powder, this batch all sold under the Ocho-Rios and Oriental brands.
We may hear in future that the product was used in a restaurant or other food service establishment, since the product was sold in containers up to 50 pounds.
Here’s what curry fans should look for:
- Oriental Hot Curry Powder, 50 lb
- Ocho-Rios Mild Curry Powder, 5 lb
- Ocho-Rios Jamaican Nice Mild and Spicy Hot Curry Powder, 4 oz
The Food and Drug Administration didn’t specify what it means for a curry powder to simultaneously be “mild,” “spicy,” and “hot,” but did note that the agency has no official standard for how much lead can be in a spice product and for it to still be considered safe to eat. There is, however, a standard for candy (0.1 ppm) and drinking water (0.015 ppm).
